Wingard’s direction is similarly assured. But for me he gets the balance just right, taking some of Project’s best ideas and explores them in ever-more inventive sequences, building on the legend of the Blair Witch in a way that answers some questions yet poses many more.

So if you want a film that re-invents this particular franchise, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Crafted by Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett – the filmmaking duo behind the hugely entertaining You’re Next and The Guest – Blair Witch has a similar structure to its predecessor, the journey starting out light-hearted, becoming tense as a perceived threat becomes ever more real, and then turning darker as night falls and things go bump in the night, including incidents involving sticks and stones that fans of the original will immediately recognise.

What we can tell you is how effective it is as both sequel, and terrifying horror movie in its own right. And that’s just about all we’re willing to reveal in terms of plot, as the fun in watching Blair Witch comes from the film’s many surprises. And so six amateur filmmakers head into the Black Hills Forest in search of Heather. Along the way they visit Lane (Wes Robinson) and his girlfriend Talia (Valorie Curry) who posted the aforementioned footage online using the pseudonym ‘Darknet666.’ But oddball Lane refuses to reveal where he found the tape unless the pair of them are allowed to join the hunting party.
His girlfriend Lisa (Callie Hernandez) decides to document the trip for her film class – hence the many cameras – while friends Peter (Brandon Scott) and Ashley (Corbin Reid) join them for the adventure. Heather’s brother James (James Allen McCune) has become obsessed with her disappearance, trawling the web for clues to her whereabouts, and stumbling on YouTube footage that convinces him to make his own journey to Burkitsville. And with technology having improved over the intervening years, that footage is shot on webcams and head cameras (with built-in GPS no less) and even using drones. They never returned, but their recordings were recovered, suggesting the filmmakers were haunted by some unseen entity before entering an abandoned house, where their story came to a horrible, abrupt, and somewhat vague end.īlair Witch ignores cash-grab sequel Book of Shadows, and instead picks up 20 years on, again using recovered footage, this time found in May 2014. The film revolved around three student filmmakers – Heather, Michael and Joshua – heading into the Black Hills Forest of Burkittsville, Maryland in 1994, in search of the title character of legend. The original Blair Witch Project is one of the most important movies in horror history, single-handedly putting the ‘found footage’ genre on the map, and being marketed so brilliantly via the Internet – then in its infancy – that there were even audiences who believed the fake documentary to be real.
So while the following review will be as spoiler-free as we can manage, the smart thing to do is to come back once you’ve seen the movie, which is really good. The original Blair Witch Project employed mystery and surprise to great effect, and this belated sequel works in much the same way. First-things-first – the best way to see this movie is to go in blind.
